Jane's Stats (and Hannah's too)

Jane had her two-year appointment. Here's how she measures up:

Weight: 24 pounds - 15th percentile
Height: 35 inches - 75th percentile

I guess she is taller than I thought.
She had a rough appointment. The doc decided to flush out her ears because of all the junk in them, and she howled in pain. It was sad to watch, so sad, but at least I got to hold her.

We thought we'd figure out where Hannah is at, just for fun.

Weight: 32 pounds - at the 42nd percentile
Height: 42 inches - above the 97th percentile

We knew she was tall but it's strange to see how tall. That girl is going to be taller than me by age eight- not fair.

••••••••

On a slightly unrelated topic...
Every time I walk to the pediatrician's office, I see this office sign and I laugh:

Maybe Jack (A.K.A. "L" Kevorkian) has moved on to euthanasia via laughing gas.

Another one I see from time to time is Dr. Rotman, Dentist.
I wonder if either of them have lost potential patients because of their names...

Hannah and a boy cut

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Hannah suddenly told me that she wanted short hair. Where did that come from? I asked her how short she wanted her hair. She said,
BOY SHORT.
Don't get me wrong. I have some dear friends with the cutest short hair cuts, but it just so happens that I am deeply fond of Hannah's golden brown locks and to lose them would be tragic. Am I being dramatic? It's amazing how attached I can get to things I adore.

I'm going to see if I can find a way to show Hannah what she would look like with boy-short hair. If she absolutely loves the look - and loves it for at least ten years - I'll consider letting her do it.
If I can't get through to her, I might be calling on reinforcements for an intervention.

"Anything!"

Lately, when I ask Hannah questions like, "what's that noise?" or "what are you doing in there?" or "what is Jane crying about?", her response is invariably, "Anything", which she means is nothing, which really means something.

This afternoon, when I called out to her in the kitchen, "Hannah, what are you doing?"
and she said, "Anything!", I knew I needed to check on her.
She had opened the box of pasta I had just bought and was making letters from a pile of noodles on the floor.

At first I was upset that she was using the same noodles I was planning on cooking with tonight. Then, I realized it was a good learning opportunity for her, as she doesn't like to write letters on paper too much.
I let her play. What are a few less noodles in my pot, anyway? Sometimes, I really have to yell at myself to keep things in perspective.

Every parents dream

Hannah said she wanted these for her "wedding flowers".
I don't know who she thinks she is talking about her wedding already, but I will say that if her desire for a weed bouquet holds, then she will have one happy mother and father on her wedding day.

"These girls..."

That's what I said tonight when I saw Hannah and Jane after coming home from a meeting.
I saw them and I thought, "Ah, these are my girls, and they are... amazing!"
I practically smothered them until lights out,
and then I smothered them a little more.
Hannah just took it like she had no will. I think she loved it.

Jane cracked me up when she starting crying to have the roll of duct tape with her in bed. She has certainly grown fond of the stuff since it became a necessary component of diaper changing.

Hannah really isn't this bad at smiling. She happened to be showing me a "teeth smile."

These girls...

Mother-daughter picnic date

Hannah has been asking if she could go on a picnic for some time now. She has some books with picnic scenes, complete with the red-checkered blanket and she never fails to point it out to me. Well, tonight the little lady was granted her wish.
For our date, Hannah and I packed up the bike trailer with the necessary items for an outdoor meal and headed to the nearest park with grass, which isn't as close as you might think for all the parks they have in NYC.

Here's what was on the menu, designed by Hannah:
pasta,
tomatoes,
chips,
apples with peanut butter,
yogurt,
pink lemonade and
chocolate milk

In addition, Hannah wanted some time for activities so we brought along bubbles and water balloons (again, her choice). Hannah has been wanting to play with water balloons since she saw kids filling them up at the park, but I realized tonight when I pulled them out that she didn't know what to do with them.
I said, "OK, do you want to throw them now?"
She looked at me incredulously, eyes wide and slowly said, "Nooo!"
"Well, what do you want to do with them?
"We can put them in the grass."

Eventually, I convinced her that the divine purpose of a water balloon is for it to be thrown with great force. I threw one and after it popped and splashed, she was eager to throw one herself. She made me proud as she launched each one.
We blew some bubbles and then it was time to go.

I really enjoyed having the time to focus only on Hannah. We definitely need to do it more often.

When we came home, we ate some of these simple and delicious treats that I saw on Natalie's blog this morning.

Hannah saw them on her blog too, and wanted them for our date so we made some. We decided to share them, much to Dan's delight. Dan said that's how s'mores should be- he's one of those who doesn't care for the dryness that a s'more can offer. I can see what he means.

We watched The Princess Bride to end Hannah's date night. She often asks to watch it, but she can only watch it with us- "It's scary!" but she loves it anyway.

I so look forward to date nights.

The culmination of things

Hannah has previously shown her passion for towels and boxes. Now these two things have come together in what seems to be perfect harmony.

As always, when things are too quiet, I have to do safety and quality checks to make sure everything is OK. I walked into my bedroom and found this:

I asked her what she was doing but she didn't respond. I peeked under the towel to find her smiling at me.

She said she was trying to go to sleep, so I let her be. She never fell asleep, but I'm glad she put those Costco boxes to good use. I kept the boxes out of the recycling for a couple of days just for play time.

Hannah and her sister

Hannah is such a nurturing big sister. She is almost always concerned about Jane and trying to take care of her.
Today, after I put Jane down for her nap and without me knowing, Hannah had gone in their room to cover Jane up with Hannah's "special blanket" and put some stuffed animals under her arm, one of which is Jane's Lamby. I went in to make sure it was cool enough and found her like this.
I felt my heart warm a little, took a picture and then pulled the blanket down as it happens to be the warmest quilt we own. She was surely roasting. I just hope Hannah doesn't go back in there to see her good intentions disregarded.

*******

We have been doing other things, mostly Summer related- BBQs, swimming, eating ice cream, playing in parks, etc. Unfortunately, however, our computer is getting fixed and the photos I have taken remain on my camera (the above photo was taken with Dan's).
We should be up and blogging in no time.

Out of our mouths

Hannah was asleep on the floor one night while we were at Cannon Beach. She started to stir, waking me up, then she moaned and she yelled out,
"Grumpy Old Troll!!!"

(Those of you who know Dora know who I'm talking about)

•••••

Also at Cannon Beach, we visited the ward in Seaside for Fast and Testimony meeting. We sat way in the back and even though we couldn't see a thing, Hannah was listening. A woman was crying and sniffling through her testimony. Hannah, with a mixed look of angst and boredom said,

"This is kinda sad."

I just wish I had a picture.

•••••

Jane makes this funny sound at random.
She very quickly sticks her tongue out and back in with a "bulub"
She'll do it when the elevator door opens, or she'll do it after I've given her a snack, etc. Sometimes she laughs at herself after she's done it.
I have know idea where she got that one.

In a mood

Despite what some may think, Hannah is not always a ball of sunshine. In fact, lately she has been quite stubborn with a little added sass. It seems my cogency is having less and less affect on her.
Today we started off the day with a walk. It was beautiful out and we had no set schedule so I thought we would have an enjoyable time together. Well, this is how Hannah looked for the first part of our outing.

Whatever, Mom! (She never actually said that, it's just that kind of look.)

I let her be for a while. Eventually, I made the mistake of encouraging her to move along the sidewalk.
She sat on the nearest steps, pouted, turned away and gave me the silent treatment.

Jane started to get impatient since we weren't moving, as did I, so I prodded Hannah a bit more. I should have known that would not help. Luckily, both girls got distracted by some birds and a dog so we were on our way again, but the clouds still hung over Hannah's head.

Finally, after a handful of Smarties and a game of peek-a-boo through the bushes, the sun shone again in Hannah's world.

She's so much like her dad- all they both need is some sugar and the right kind of fun and life is grand!

Princesses come in all forms

Yesterday, while we were shopping with my friend Ginger, Hannah saw Ginger put lip gloss on her daughter at the make-up counter. After that, she wanted me to put make-up on her so today I let her put lip gloss on. I left her in my room and when I came back, I found her with some of my old eye shadow,

but she didn't apply it anywhere near her eyes. She has often been interested in my every-so-often ritual of make-up application, but I don't know where she got the idea to apply anything besides moisturizer to her upper lip and the surrounding areas. Maybe she knew what she was doing and wanted to create the perfect Fu Manchu mustache.
I continued to watch her for a while, as she concentrated her efforts on every brush stroke. She was happy with the results.

Afterwards, she dressed up in her fancy princess garb and pranced around. I laughed every time she turned to show her face. I've never seen a princess with a Fu Manchu.

Cool-down tactics

We've been practicing and experimenting with different cool-down techniques in this NYC heat wave. Today, we used all of them, as temperatures reached up to 98˚- maybe higher.
Tactic #1 is to be somewhere, anywhere with air conditioning- we stayed at home for half the day. Tactic #2 is to eat something very cold (and preferably delicious)- we had fruit sorbet after lunch and root beer floats after dinner. Tactic #3 is to go to the water- we, even I, played in the water at the nearby park and later, the girls went into the tub with their bathing suits on.

This evening's cool-down, tactic #4, was introduced by Hannah. We were walking down our hill to go home around 7pm at a temp of 94˚, and Hannah started running fast and got far ahead. I called out,
"Hannah, wait for us, please!"
Hannah stopped, turned around and said,
"Mom, I'm just trying to get colder".
With that, she turned down the hill and started running again. Then, Jane started running after her, so we decided to give running as a cool-down a try. To our surprise, we did feel a bit cooler as the slightest of breezes whirred by. Let it be known, however, that this tactic only works before one has exerted the amount of energy to cause a rise in body temperature.

We will be exploring more methods and techniques of cooling down until the days themselves have done so.

Hannah's first scripture

There we were- two proud parents, beaming at our oldest daughter, our three-year-old from the back of the Primary room. She caught our eyes and gave us a slightly embarrassed smile and laugh. She couldn't stay still up in front and I'm glad her turn came quickly. I crouched down next to her to whisper the scripture in her ear, reminding her to speak loudly. I wasn't sure she would actually do it. I thought she might get stage fright since she is often shy around others and in big groups.
She read the scripture from D&C 97:15, broken up, of course, as I recited each phrase in her ear. She says glory, "galoooree" - so cute! When she finished, I could tell she was proud of herself, and I was of her. Dan and I said good-bye and I gave her a big kiss on the cheek. It was a fun moment.

I never thought of that first moment our first child would give a talk or something of the like in church. It was a "first" though, and like all firsts, it was enjoyable to witness.

Wise beyond her years

It is not a bad thing that children should occasionally, and politely, put parents in their place.
-Colette

Hannah has been schooling me in parenting lately. It cracks me up! She'll say things like, "Mom, just give Jane some water and put her down for a nap because she just tired." Her motherly intuition at work early, I suppose.
Last weekend, on our drive home from our family camping trip, I was trying to reach around to give Jane a snack from the passenger seat with my right hand, as there was something in my left. I was obviously struggling and Hannah said, "Mom, use your other hand." I was a little amazed that she understood how to rectify the "problem". Dan and I had a good laugh.
Every day she's telling it like it is. She seems so much older when she speaks confidently with such knowledge.

What's a moonuwal?

Hannah has been going through a phase (at least I hope it's a phase) of making up words. She has a huge vocabulary (of real words) and she is old enough to know how to speak clearly and audibly so we know she is speaking serious nonsense. Instead of asking what to call something, she creates a phonetic conglomeration, as I like to call it, and that's what it is. She's so confident about it, it makes me wonder if she knows something I don't.
Pointing to a wire whisk,
"That's a what, Hannah?"
"A moonuwal. That's what it is."

Like a cat

This happened before we left for Ireland so I forgot about it.

Hannah was in a strange mood the morning of our departure, maybe because we were focusing our attention elsewhere. She was walking around the place, a little mopishly. I was busy organizing and planning last minute details when I heard the bathroom door close with some force. I remember thinking, "OK, she must need some private time."
Some time passed, and I remembered that I should probably check on Hannah. I went into the bathroom and I couldn't see her. I looked in the tub and as I pulled the shower curtain back, my eye caught a personage of small proportions between the liner and outer curtain. Hannah was lying on the edge of the bathtub, perfectly balanced and she appeared to be sleeping.

I fetched the camera,I pulled back the curtain, took this next photo

and then she opened her eyes. I don't know if the sound of the camera woke her or if she was never in fact asleep, that she was just pretending, but it appeared to be the former. Either way, she seemed quite comfortable perched up there for a significant amount of time. So far, it is the strangest place I have found her "sleeping".

Going out

Yesterday, we were getting ready to go out to eat with my parents before they flew out to Israel. Hannah told me she was hungry so I explained to her that we would be eating out at a restaurant. She said,

"OK... What's a restaurant?"

Evidently, we don't take our girls out much.

She makes people smile

Today we walked in the rain to dance class. Hannah lagged behind most of the time because she couldn't resist puddle jumping and playing with her umbrella. At one point, she stopped in the middle of a group of commuters that were waiting at a bus stop, and she yelled ahead to me, "Hey, Mom!"
I turned around, and she put down her umbrella and spun it while she danced around it several times. She called everyone to attention, and suddenly people started to smile. It was very pleasing to see the transformation on their faces.
Hannah finished her show, and ran to catch up with me. She was so happy and so proud of her performance. I asked her about it, and she said she was like Singing in the Rain, which is her new favorite movie. She continued to use her umbrella and boots as props throughout our journey. We were at least a half hour late to class, but it was worth it to see Hannah have so much fun.

Hannah's Sunday quotes

Hannah kept us laughing yesterday...

We were driving home from church and I asked Hannah about Primary.

Me: How was Sunbeams?
Hannah: Good
Dan: All of the girls took their shoes off in class.
Me: That's funny.
Hannah: That's not funny, mama. That's cool!

******
Later, Dan and I were working on dinner in the kitchen. Out of the blue, Hannah calls out from the living room,

Hannah: Mama, get the gate.
Me: What gate?
Hannah: The gate for the kitchen. (We used to put up a child gate when Jane was younger)
Me: Why should I get the gate?
Hannah: So I won't bug you in there.

******
Even later, we were out visiting friends and as we were leaving Hannah said "good-bye" but not "thank you" for the many DVDs our friends let us borrow. Lately she will not say thank you to anyone. We've been trying to teach her good manners. We even have a Dora book about manners hoping that she would at least listen to Dora if not to us. Nothing doing. When it comes time to say thank you, she averts her eyes and buries her head.
On our walk home, a woman stopped us to ask us for directions. After we helped her, she thanked us and I said to Hannah,

Me: See Hannah? We did something nice for that woman and she said thank you. That's good manners. Can you say thank you when someone does something nice for you?
Hannah: No, I don't have good manners.

She said it so matter-of-fact that I'm not sure there's hope...

Sleep Talking

Hannah was running a high fever last night so we brought her in our room to monitor and comfort her. It turns out Hannah is quite garrulous in a feverish state. I had never heard her talk in her sleep before, but maybe that's because I am rarely within ear shot of her ramblings.
Her outbursts were logical in the beginning,
"Where are the goldfish?"

to which I responded logically,
"We'll get some in the morning."
(I assumed she was referring to the edible variety)

Then, she exclaimed,
"I want to go to Sunbeams!"
I looked at her closely to find she was in fact sleeping.

A little while later, I heard,
"Horses need dirt."
and that was the end. She was silent until morning.

********************************
After breakfast, Hannah did bring up the goldfish by announcing,
"There's a monster in the goldfish."
I concluded that she must have had a nightmare about goldfish. How frightening!
I still wonder about Sunbeams and the horses...

Towel Fetish

I wash my hands at the kitchen sink, and when I'm finished, I reach down to where the towel normally hangs. There is nothing to be found. I am not surprised. I just call for Hannah.

************

We're not sure why, but Hannah seems to have a fascination for towels. If they are within her reach, she will take them.
Sometimes she lays them down neatly across the entry hallway...

sometimes she uses them as a blanket...

and sometimes she puts them in packages for us to open.

I have yet to find the hand towel that's been missing from the bathroom for two days.

Missing Noelle

Hannah has been obsessed with her cousin Noelle this morning.
First, she got on the intercom phone and pretended to talk to Noelle. Then, she mentioned she wanted to play with Noelle today. It didn't matter that I told her we couldn't see her today, that we would have to fly across the country to see her. She just insisted that we see Noelle to-day! A phone call will have to suffice.
It sounds like they bonded when we were in Sacramento a few weeks ago. I'm so glad! I think they are going to be good friends throughout their lives.

We miss you Noelle!
We can't wait to see you again!

Growth spurt?

I can't believe how many times Hannah has fallen today. I lost count after five. It matters not if she is inside or out, shoeless or not. She's just tripping over her own two feet. Growth spurt, perhaps?
Some of the spills she's taken have been mild without much consequence. Others have resulted in pain and tears. I'm glad to be the one to sweeten the bitterness in such cases.

Please!!!

Hannah asked me very politely many times to take her boots off so she could dress up. She waited and waited until she just couldn't wait any more.
I saw her later with a princess dress on.
Then, I went upstairs and saw this:

I felt bad that I didn't help her when she really truly needed it, but I'm glad she found a way out.

Potty Post- You've been warned

Hannah is... well, she's regressing and can't or won't make it to the bathroom on time.
It usually, but not always, happens when she's wearing her dress-up dresses, probably because they are a hassle to go to the bathroom in.

Today, she wet her pants and we had a talk.

Me: Hannah, where do we go to the bathroom?
Hannah: The toilet.
Me: So where are you going to go the next time you need to go potty?
Hannah: (enthusiastically) The toilet!

Hours later, Hannah had a mess in her pants. I hope you know what I mean when I say "mess". I was shocked. I can't remember the last time she did that.
We had another talk.

Me: Hannah, where do we go poopy?
Hannah: In the toilet.
Me: Are you going to tell mommy and daddy when you need to go so we can make it to the toilet?
Hannah: Yes! (exits bathroom)
Me: Good, because we are running out of underwear.
Hannah: No, we're just walking...

How do we help her be a potty champ again? (OK, terrible title)
Any suggestions?

From Hannah's Eye- A Critique

Dan gave the girls disposable cameras for Valentine's Day. Hannah in particular took any and all photo opps with ease and confidence.

Now we explore the creative imagery produced by this up-and-coming photog.
We shall first get a chance to see what she see's in us- a study of her human subjects in their own nature.

Hannah has captured so much life and emotion. A mother, a wife, a cook? Yes, she makes it clear. The composition is well done and the focal point, perfect.

This photo tells a tale that takes us a little deeper into the human psyche. There is a sense of blurred confusion in a midst of darkness, yet the subject has a grasp on the happy and pink in the world. The element of fear and surprise as defined by those popping eyes, keep us guessing as to what, who, why and how. One can't help but wonder what lies in store for this little one. A little dark, but brilliant!

Now for a look at the genre of lifestyle and documentary photography:

One need not come to New York to see first hand one of the hundreds upon thousands of dog walkers in city. Hannah has accomplished the daring task of snapping a shot of a stranger on the street that is walking a mere suggestion of a dog. The absence of dog makes the photograph more intriguing, leaving the viewer again with a little guess work. Well done.

An unexpecting pediatrician hard at work, charting stats. (By complete chance, I happened to be present and the time this picture was taken, and she captured the moment precisely.)

This is a wonderful study in perspective and p.o.v. The fence adds movement and depth while it proves the photographer to be just a wee bit higher than ground level. The pedestrian in line with the photog's eye adds focus and purpose to the scene.

A little nature from one experiencing life in the concrete jungle:

Here is a good example of contrasting elements to evoke interest. Nature is the predominating factor among train tracks, power lines, and machinery, leading one to the notion that nature could ultimately be more important than the man-made things of this world.

Here Hannah has chosen to look to the sky, and what did she find? This one is simply organic.

Now, the basics:

A wonderful burst of color!

This may be just an ambulance to the viewer, but Hannah has chosen to demonstrate that design can be found in all things mundane or otherwise.

And now, meet the photographer

Hannah Ruth Dyer, at work in a photo session.
Hannah enjoys walks, anything of or relating to princesses, the Sound of Music and modern dance.

Hannah is...

Hannah is...
Happiness, kindness, oh so sweetness,
Friendster, daughter, good big sister,
Spirited, gifted, graceful when lifted,
Laughter, crafter, cleaner upper after,

Dancer, twirler, leap leap leaper!
Helpful, willful, far beyond skillful,
Capable, hugable, undoubtedly lovable,
Wishful, thoughtful, comprisingly beautiful.

Hannah is...
THREE!

Happy Birthday Hannah. We love you for everything you are!

Hannah on the Prophet, and Joey

This morning I was talking to Hannah about President Hinckley. I told her that he died so we have to call a new prophet to lead the church.
In response, she said, "We can call Joey. He's in New Hampshire."

Hannah's "Possibilities"

The other night on the way in the building, Hannah picked up some political pamphlet by some weird .org. As I opened the 2nd door into the lobby, she show it to me and exclaimed, "Look! It's my possibilities!" Through the lobby, up the elevator, into our door, it was "This is my possibilities", "I have to take my possibilities with me", "Daddy do you see my possibilities?"

Hannah's "possibilities" soon ended up on the floor but as we left to go pick up Minna, she picked up the pamphlet and explained. "I have to take my possibilities with me."
When we met up with Minna again she exclaimed, "Look at my possibilities, Mama!" And then on the way home she said to Jane, "Jane do you want to see my possibilities?" Jane promptly crushed Hannah's possibilities. Hannah's exasperated response was "oh no! Jane broke my possibilities! I need a new possibilities!"

What does it all mean?

Lately, every time I enter the bathroom, this is what I see: vessels full, partially full, or overflowing with water. Hannah will find whatever she knows will hold this precious resource and she will fill and refill and transfer and transport until I come to cut her off. This common practice in our bathroom reminds me of the girl in the movie "Signs", who leaves glass after glass of water around the house. Later these glasses of water help to save her and her family from an alien invasion in her home.
Maybe Hannah knows something we don't...?

Hannah in "Another Evening Out"

We took a walk tonight to the foot bridge to watch for trains. Hannah was running way too far ahead (she was very excited to be out again!) so we called out for her to slow down and wait for us. She then yelled,
"DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME!" and she kept on running.
She did stop however, so that I could zip up her coat. As soon as I was done, she took off and said,
"DON'T WORRY ABOUT ME, AGAIN!!!"

I caught up with her at the top of the hill and found her talking to a kindly gentleman of significant age. As I walked up to them, I heard her say to him, "I'm only 4" (???)(For those of you who don't know, Hannah is not quite 3 yet). Then she proceeded to tell him how many teeth she had...

After we watched a couple of trains go by, our new friend said good-bye. Hannah asked,
"Where are you going?"
"To watch TV"
"You're going to watch a show?"
"Yeah."
"Then you're going to put your jammies on?"

Funny girl.

From the archives...

Cucumber. Is it that hard to say? Maybe for a 20 month old.
We've always thought Hannah had a large vocabulary and was very articulate. However, at one point in time, some words were a little more of a challenge for her to say. We had a good laugh with this one about a year and a half ago, but we are still laughing. (For some reason, YouTube likes to darken videos. Sorry!)

Hannah on daddies

Hannah: Where's daddy?
Minna: Daddy's in Florida.
H: Who's daddy's daddy?
M: Daddy's in Florida. We'll talk to him later.
H: No, who's DADDY's DADDY!
M: Oh! Daddy's daddy is Grandpa.
H: Daddy's daddy is Grandpa???
M: Yep. I have a daddy too. It's Papa. Just like daddy is your daddy, Papa is my daddy. He's your Papa but he's my daddy.

H: (long pause...) I'm Hannah!

"What Happened?"
"She tripped and hit her head on the dresser knob..."

Three Stiches
Hannah was playing and being quite normal when we were finally called from the waiting room, well except for her pink/red/bloody/crusty hair. She was a little afraid of the doctor. He examined it, numbed it up with some goo (no shot thank goodness), and brought in a TV with Blue's Clues. She sat quite happily watching the show while the doctor stitched her up. The anesthetic worked pretty good. I watched and took photos as her head bobbed when he would tug the stitches tight. She was more concerned with Blue's Clues than her damaged scalp. We ended up getting home close to midnight.

I have uploaded some close-ups of the wonderfully gruesome wound and the stitches here. WARNING, these photos are not for the faint-of-heart.
